HIRI West Rugby League will kick off its second week of pre-season matches tomorrow with two new clubs confirmed to compete this year, according to an official.
League president Hubert Warupi said Boera and Papa would host matches this season with participation growing from villages along the Redscar Bay in Central.
“Tuhava Broncos and Kunama Tigers will be representing Roku village and Gorohu village respectively and will participate in the competition for the first time since the competition was re-activated in 2019,” he told The National.
“It’s exciting to have more teams because the idea of the competition was for participation right across the entire Hiri West area and now we seem to have achieved this.
“It is the pre-season and with continued discussions and encouragement, hopefully the two new clubs will be consistent in fielding teams throughout the season.
“The four impacted villages of Porebada, Boera, Papa and Lealea have taken the lead along with Kido as the core clubs and the upcoming season should be exciting.
“The season will feature three divisions with men’s, women’s and Under-20 teams to play at two venues (Boera and Papa).
“After this weekend the season fixtures will be finalised by league competition managers Hisiu Moi and Leke Matagu.” Fixtures: Sat, July 3 — Kido Lagava v Porebada Bulldogs, Boera Sailors v Caution Bay (10am start for U20s, women and men at Boera), Kunama Tigers v Veasi Dogs, Tuhava Broncos v Koita Cowboys (10am start for U20s, women and men at Papa).
