Tumbe aim for consistency after finding their weakness

WAGHI Tumbe chairman Paul Tumun says they are aiming for more consistency after jumping out of the blocks and fading over the past two Digicel Cup seasons.
He told The National that the Jiwaka government-side were confident that changes in management and their coaching staff would help lay the foundation for an improved campaign.
Tumun said they had identified their weaknesses from previous seasons and would look to improve on them.
“Our failure over the past two seasons basically came down to the management, coaching staff and the players,” he said.
“We were dominant over the past two years and we finished third in the regular season but got knocked out of the finals.
“It proved that we were more like spectators in the finals and we went to sleep.
“We lost focus and there was no control. Now we’ve made important management and coaching changes.
“We’ve recruited quality players who we believe can combine well with the team.
“It’s a new-look team and we are hoping to finish better or even win the title to redeem ourselves from the failures over the past two seasons.”
Tumun said with the provincial government’s backing, Tumbe were ready to kick off their campaign against hosts and defending premiers Lae Tigers on July 5.
“We have a good physiotherapist helping the side,” he said.
“The players are eating three meals a day and camping at Minj Town Lodge. The lodge has a gym. We’ve been in camp for two weeks and have been training under a strict Covid-19 protocol issued by the Papua New Guinea National Rugby League Competition.”
