PORT Moresby AFL is awaiting confirmation from the Papua New Guinea Sports Foundation’s (PNGSF) venue management team to reopen the Colts Oval following the easing of restrictions after the state of emergency.
POMAFL president Douglas Lai told The National that discussions on the competition were ongoing with AFL Papua New Guinea.
“I have yet to receive confirmation from PNGSF with regard to the re-opening of Colts Oval,” he said.
“It’s important that we get some clarity on training and match-day measures that will be applied in full consideration of the Covid-19 back-to-sport protocol.
“If all goes well and with consultation with the PNGAFL commission, the POMAFL season should start on July 4. I am hoping to meet all club executives this weekend and confirm their views and participation in the shortened season.
“But until then, POMAFL executives will keep clubs and players informed on what to do next.”
AFLPNG earlier last month said a start in July was likely, however, it conceded that the task for associations to consider basic hygiene and social distancing would be a major challenge when resuming their activities and competitions.
AFLPNG will also be looking to resume its school and development programmes for the year following the passing of the National Pandemic Act in Parliament on Friday which will now see schools resuming normal operations.
