Tumbe beat Gulf Isou

AN Emmanuel Waine double helped Waghi Tumbe move into the Digicel Cup top-six with a 32-16 win over Gulf Isou in round 10 of the Digicel Cup at Sir John Guise Stadium in Port Moresby yesterday.
In Kimbe, the Cutters dropped a place to seventh after their 16-32 loss to the fourth-placed Port Moresby Vipers at Humphreys Oval on Saturday.
At Minj’s John Ambane Oval, the Mt Hagen Eagles recorded their second victory of the season with 36-10 win over Goroka Lahanis.
In Port Moresby, Tumbe scored a converted try early in the game through centre Waine to lead 6-0.
Isou responded in the 15 minute when Tumbe winger Paul Koi dropped a Nicky Hasu bomb which saw Alwyne Kevaru score a try for Gulf to trail 4-6.
Winger John Ongoi scored an unconverted try in the 26th minute to extend Tumbe’s lead to 10-4.
Isou then leveled the scores at 10-10 three minutes later after Hasu set up Charlie Koto who scored on the right flank.
Waine completed his double a few minutes before halftime when he outpaced Isou’s Junior Oki to score a converted try to give Tumbe a 16-10 lead at halftime.
The second half was all Tumbe as they piled on three more tries through winger Paul Koi, prop Koso Badi and lock Daniel Pai to lead 32-10. Isou only managed to score a consolation try five minutes from fulltime.
Waghi Tumbe coach Dusty Mockley said he was happy with their attack.
“We needed the win to move up to sixth and my players did not disappoint,” he said.
But Mockley they still need to work on their line speed as they look forward to playing the Rabaul Gurias in our final round of the regular season.
