BOXING patron Ben Micah has urged Port Moresby residents to attend the World Boxing Council title bout between national light heavyweight champions John Korake and his Thai opposite Chaloemporn Sawatsuk at the Sir John Guise Stadium Indoor Complex on Sunday.
He said the fight was significant to boxing in PNG as it was sanctioned by the World Boxing Council (WBC). “PNG has never seen anything like this,” Micah said.
“The fight will give us world-boxing recognition.
“The last time PNG hosted a WBC fight was 40 years ago, during the days of the late John Aba and legend Martin Beni.
“I am appealing to Port Moresby residents to turn up at the Sir John Guise Stadium Indoor Complex to support our boxers.”
Micah congratulated Oceania Fight Promotions (OFP) director Maryanne Millie for pulling off the staging of one of the greatest events in the history of PNG boxing.
“This is a great achievement by OFP,” he said.
“Although they’ve been established for only six months now, they have done well and now PNG boxing has caught the attention of world boxing.”
Micah also welcomed fighters from Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines with their managers and coaching staff.
Meanwhile, OFP has confirmed that Prime Minister James Marape and WBC officials will attend the event.
