PROFESSIONAL boxer Douglas Walo has urged Morobe residents in Port Moresby to get behind him when he steps into the ring at the John Guise Stadium Indoor Complex on Sunday.
The 28-year-old, from Madang and Morobe, will face Indonesia’s Ramadhan Weiru in the middleweight division.
According to Oceania Fight Promotions, Walo turned professional in 2009 and has won two out of four bouts.
Walo said he was confident of knocking out Weiru.
“I have trained hard for years since I took up boxing at a young age,” he said.
Walo said he had been training under PNG boxing legend and promoter Martin Beni.
“His trainings are tough. I’ve learned a lot under Martin,” he said.
“I will not let him down. I urge the Morobe community to come and support me when I fight.
“I represent the people of Morobe and the youths back home. I dedicate this fight to them.”
Walo thanked Oceania Fight Promotions (OFP) for arranging the fight.
Meanwhile, OFP director Maryanne Millie wants boxing to become a major sport in the country.
“We want our boxers to train hard and fight well so that they can go on to fight on the world stage in the future,” she said.
