VANUATU Tuskers will look to take advantage of Niue’s struggle with Port Moresby’s heat and humidity when they clash today in the second round of the Oceania Cup at Lloyd Robson Oval.
Despite being belted 78-3 by PNG in their first match on Tuesday the Tuskers’ tactics will not change much.
Vanuatu captain Andrew Kalsakau is aware of his side’s shortcomings but pinpointed defence as the key to being competitive.
He said the Tuskers would look to contain the larger Niueans before opening up in the later stages.
“We hardly had any possession in the game (against PNG), but when we did we showed we can be dangerous,” Kalsakau said.
“Niue is another big team so we’ll try the same strategy – tire them out and  run around them.”
Niue captain Luka Gibb said his side had struggled with the heat and needed to acclimatise quickly.
He admitted his team made too many errors in a scrappy first match against the Solomon Island Warriors (Niue lost 22-19) but added that they finished well by scoring the last try and getting within three points of the Warriors.
Ugas reserve back Manoa Lito made an impact when he came on in the first match scoring two tries with his blinding speed and will probably start against the Tuskers.
But the Ugas are less one man on the bench with only six reserves after arriving in PNG with only 21 players – the other teams have the full complement of 22 players.
