TWETY-five new players have joined the Hela Wigmen for the upcoming Digicel Cup season after the reigning champions lost seven players to the SP Hunters as well as few players to the other franchises.
Club chairman Andy Hetra said they had a “very gruelling pre-season” with 50-60 players before trimming the squad to 35 men, 25 of whom are rookies.
He said the players had been recruited from the Hela leagues, Coca-Cola Ipatas Cup, National Capital District Governor’s Cup and others.
“A third of the team are talents from Hela, we also have players from other centres because we want to be competitive,” Hetra said.
“Before we recruit the players, we do proper research and screening to understand them and find out what aspirations they have to further their rugby league careers.
“We are a club that want to give opportunities to players who strive to be better, who want to reach the next level.
“You can’t have players who aren’t hungry for success.
“These are extra work that the coaching staff do to find potential players and develop them.
“We believe in their potential but the challenge is on them to believe in themselves. Our job as a club is to provide a conducive environment.
“But as players, they need to work hard.
“When they work hard and we provide that environment, it produces results and enhances their growth and development as players.”
