Two arrested over cop’s assault

TWO people have been arrested and charged over the assault of a police officer in Menyamya, Morobe.
The officer, who is the Menyamya rural station commander, had tied two men to the hood of a police vehicle and drove to the station.
The men had allegedly been found with marijuana at a local market.
Acting Morobe police commander Chief Insp John Daviaga told The National that the arrest came after an investigation into the assault of the two suspects by the officer and subsequent assault of the officer by the people at Menyamya station.
The incident happened in February.
Chief Insp Daviaga said while the officer was being assaulted, the two suspects escaped.
He said three suspects allegedly involved in the assault of the station commander had been charged and detained while a fourth was still at large.
He said the station commander, who was taken to Lae for treatment, had also been suspended and was under investigation for his treatment of the two men found with marijuana.
He added that the officer’s firearm which was taken during the assault had been returned.
Chief Supt Daviaga condemned the humiliation of the suspects.
