Two Chinese firms receive Government road contracts
THE Government has awarded two Chinese companies contracts to work on parts of the Highlands Highway.
The contracts are funded by the Asian Development Bank.
The projects are part of the K3 billion Highlands Highway rehabilitation programme.
The China Wu Yi was awarded a contract worth K203.3 million to upgrade a total of 161km of road, expected to be completed in 2023.
China Habour Engineering Company (CHEC) was awarded a K170 million contract for 57km.
China Wu Yi will upgrade and carry out maintenance work on the portion of the highway from Henganofi district in the Eastern Highlands to Mangiro Bridge in Chimbu province.
CHEC will upgrade and carry out maintenance from Mangiro Bridge to Miunde Bridge in Chimbu.
China Wu Yi will continue from Miunde Bridge to Kagamuga in Western Highlands.
Officials from both companies and Works secretary David Wereh attended the signing ceremony at Government House yesterday.

While the CHEC is doing some good work, there is no spin off participation by PNGeans. CHEC also have very old equipment and Trucks. Positions reserved for local participating PNGeans are now being executed by the Chinese who have come from abroad for the construction. They dont consider safety in all aspects. Can the Authority reserve local positions to PNGeans?
This is a very good decision to engage the Chinese Construction Companies which are doing a quality work along the sections of the highway described. Continue the funding to achieve a better outcome.

Go ahead and do the great job
Good but, The two Chinese company must buy requirements- Like Dump Trucks, Excavators, cement bags and others and employed most PNGeans. So the money can circulate with the country. Did the Authority see these issues. ?
