TWO soldiers from Moem Barracks (2RPIR) in East Sepik were admitted at the main hospital in Wewak after they were attacked outside a nightclub on Saturday, according to police.
East Sepik police commander Supt Albert Beli said the soldiers were assaulted by people believed to be from a nearby settlement.
He said they were outside waiting for their vehicle to go back to the barracks when they were attacked.
From reports Supt Beli had received from one of the soldiers, he was attacked with a hard object on his chest.
The other soldier received knife wounds on his left hand and back.
Supt Beli said police were able to identify some suspects with the help of the public.
He said two suspects were arrested and were detained.
“I am now calling on the soldiers and the other witnesses to assist the police with their statements of what happened,” Supt Beli said.
“This is to help police speed up their investigation into the incident,”
“The other suspects who are still hiding must surrender to the police.”
In another incident, a man was killed in a drunken brawl at Yawasoro yesterday.
Supt Beli said a team of police with criminal investigation division officers were deployed to the scene to investigate the incident.
