Unemployment problems

Letters

UNEMPLOYMENT is a serious problem in Papua New Guinea.
It is becoming more and more serious day by day.
PNG has a population of about eight million.
Many of these are unemployed.
The problem of unemployment is rising fast.
Every able-bodied man and women must get employed.
If not, the problem of unemployment will create difficulties for the development of the country.
Many old businesses that are not able to cope up with the changing demand and economic scenario are either down or heavy retrenchment takes place in them.
When there is slump in business, many people find themselves without jobs.
Here, from my knowledge and findings, I suggest and highlight few valid points that are needed to be taken into consideration.
First of all, we must check the fast-rising population of the country.
We cannot create jobs for all if the rate of population growth is not slowed down.
Family planning scheme should be made popular.
People should be educated about the importance of having small family.
This will help us solve the problem of unemployment.
Secondly, the education system of Papua New Guinea should be made need-based.
At present every man and woman, including thousands of university and college graduates, want a job in an office.
Education makes a student smart.
Schools and colleges are like factories.
They produces BAs, MAs and PhDs.
Even agriculture graduates want an office job in town, thus, thousands of these graduates are still roaming the streets in search of a better job.
Each year, thousands of kids are being selected to university and colleges.
The big question is should they be given jobs straight after being qualified or where will they end up.
The education of our country should be job-oriented.
It must make our student self-dependent.
Thirdly, a change in the mental attitude of our boys and girls is necessary, as many of them are service-minded. They do not want to take risks.
They do not want to start businesses or small scale industries.
They should not depend on the government for everything.
To sum it up, we have to solve the problem of unemployment on a war footing.
Population growth has to be checked.
Family planning should be made productive.
People should be encouraged to go for skills-based education.
It’s time for a change.
We need educated people into the Government and private sector, not to manipulate the system but to build the nation based on reliance, equality and transparency.
