Unfair criticism of governor-general

Letters, Normal

I AM appalled and angry to read the letter by “An eagle matis” in the other daily last week.
Obviously the writer does not understand or know the constitutional and legal roles of the governor-general.
The GG has already made his stand against corruption.
My question to the writer is simple: What has he/she done to help in the fight against corruption?
Is the writer an armchair critic or someone who is proactive?
The onus is on everyone to fight corruption, not just the GG.
The preamble of the Constitution states that all power belongs to the people, acting through their duly elected representatives.
I wish to explain the roles and duties of the GG.
Duties
Queen Elizabeth II is the head of state. Most of the queen’s domestic duties are performed by the governor-general. The GG represents the queen on ceremonial occasions such as the opening of Parliament, the presentation of honours, etc.
As in the other Commonwealth countries, the GG’s role is entirely symbolic.
Legal role
The GG appoints the chief justice on the advice of the prime minister and the leader of the opposition. The GG appoints the other justices with the advice of a judicial commission.
PNG’s judiciary is independent of the government.
It protects constitutional rights and interprets the laws.
All the issues raised by the writer are all matters for the Ombudsman Commission and judiciary system to handle.
