THE University of Papua New Guinea Bogia Students’ Association carried out an awareness at Holy Spirit Secondary in Bogia to promote a safer learning environment there following numerous school fights over the years.
Association president Fabian Apariga said the school had gone through many fights and suspension of classes that had resulted in fewer teaching staff and poor academic performances.
Apariga said, since the school attained its secondary status in 2016, there were not enough awareness done for students about the tertiary institutions in the country and made aware of the importance of entering tertiary level.
He said the awareness was to share information about the requirements for several tertiary institutions in the country and providing motivational talks and encouraging students to improve their education performance through a safe learning environment.
“The awareness was done to the grade nines and 11s, which were the only grades that were enrolled for the 2021 academic year,” Apariga said.
He said the awareness had been planned and funded by the Bogia community and Bogia UPNG students to encourage and motivate students in the district to take their education seriously and improve performances to see more students enter tertiary level.
Meanwhile, acting school principal Simon Pais said they were happy to have former students return and do such awareness to motivate and expose the students.
He said most of the students came from local primary schools and has less knowledge of institutions and opportunities outside.
