PNG University of Technology students from the Highlands region will conduct an awareness campaign in the newly-created Hela province before moving to other provinces.
The students went on air yesterday on the Western Highlands provincial radio station, Eagle 91.5 FM, and said their theme was “Maintain justice and maintain what is right according to God’s way.”
Student representative council president Charlin Mel said it was part of a nationwide awareness initiated by Unitech students to reach out to rural areas and educate them about political, economic and social issues.
Mel said more importantly they would educate people about the importance of their votes, how to identify and elect good leaders in the 2012 general election.
She said the awareness was launched in Lae weeks ago and the students from different regions would conduct the same awareness.
She said the student body was not politically motivated but felt it had a duty and responsibility to people back in the villages who did not know what was happening in the country.
She said they wanted leaders with “vision, wisdom, must be transparent and accountable”.
“The big question that every citizen of this nation needs to ask is: Why are we so poor when our country is richly blessed with natural resources?”
She said power to development was in the hands of the people and that was why they decided to come out and help.
She said a team would be sent to Hela tomorrow and would start from there and move out to other provinces.
