THE Trade Union Congress (TUC) has showed its solidarity in supporting the PNG Energy Workers Union in demanding the termination of managing director Flagon Bekker and the executive committee.
The Trade Union Congress executives were present yesterday at the sit-in protest of the PNG Power Ltd workers yesterday in Port Moresby to show their support.
PNG Energy Workers Union general-secretary Santee Margis said it was now the workers’ call to decide what to do.
He said Trade Union Congress would send an official statement later but they assured the workers that they would take the matter to the attention of Prime Minister James Marape.
Margis said the union wanted Bekker and his executive committee investigated for alleged mismanagement or they would stand down from work.
They called on Prime Minister Marape to order an investigation into problems faced by the company.
Other demands include:

  • STOPPING the unbundling and restructure until consultation and awareness was carried out nationwide among workers;
  • ADDRESSING all outstanding workers’ industrial matters as per the 2019 agreement; and,
  • REVEALING the company’s business plan for corporate, technical and operation strategies to continue improving its service reliabilities and revenues.

The workers threatened to pull off the plug if they did not get a positive response from the PPL management or the Government by today.
Margis said this was a nationwide strike and the whole country would be affected if nothing was done to address the issue.
