A STUDENT says universities in the country play a critical role in supporting the Government’s goal in Vision 2050.

Boe Ako, a PhD student at the James Cook University in Queensland, said PNG society needed to become more adaptable and responsive to the challenges brought by globalisation.

“The traditional role of universities is now challenged to respond in many ways,” he said.

“They must revise overall systems, make changes in funding arrangements, changes in teaching and learning methods, changes to the curriculum structure and in how to foster a climate of intellectual inquiries.

“The role of universities is to produce   graduates who are committed to self-development through the continuous acquisition of knowledge and experience in their career paths and are able to survive in an environment of continuous change in a rapidly changing and evolving PNG society.”

He said higher institutions needed to change their current policies to develop learners through changes incorporated in the approaches to learning and teaching.
