THE Family and Sexual Violence Unit (FSVU) of the police force dealt with 30,238 cases around the country in the past two years, including 550 arrests and 180 convictions.
Police Minister William Onglo told a parliamentary committee inquiry into gender-based violence (GBV) that the figures showed what the police had been facing every day.
Police recorded 15,444 cases of domestic violence in 2019, with only 100 people convicted.
In 2020, there were 14,794 cases reported but only 250 arrests were made plus 80 convictions.
When Onglo and Police Commissioner David Manning were asked why they needed more recourses, and whether that would guarantee the safety of women who came to the FSVU for protection, they said no.
“We do not have the resources or facilities yet.
“We are not at that particular stage yet,” Manning said.
Onglo and Manning promised to address GBV better but stressed that there was more work to be done.
They said more funding and human resources were needed to change the attitude and thinking of people around the country, that GBV was not acceptable.
