UNIVERSITY of Technology’s civil engineering department premises in Lae received a facelift with a state-of-the-art display wall built in front of the department building by former students to inspire other students to be proud of their institution.
The wall has a metal encryption that says: The home of the civil engineers.
The project was initiated in 2017 by then final-year student Steward Mabiria with the support of eight other students, staff and his current employer, the Hides Gas Development Company (HGDC).
HGDC sponsored the small yet, significant, project carrying the name of Unitech’s civil engineering department and HGDC.
The project cost K45,000 to complete.
Mabiria, currently a civil engineer with HGDC and the project’s leader, said the project itself was civil engineering in a nutshell, from things learnt from first to final year.
“The motivation behind it was for me to test myself from all the things that I learnt over the years,” he said.
“It wasn’t part of assessment but, something I wanted to leave behind to inspire and motivate others.
“It comprises of design, planning, soil structures, concrete mixing, material listing, project management, bill of quantities and many more.
“I felt that I could not move on in life when I left the project incomplete in 2017 and started working.
“I always carry with me the philosophy of leaving a legacy and footprint. So, I had to return to complete the project.”
Mabiria said it was a personal milestone for being able to finally complete the project.
The civil engineering department approved the initiative of the former final year students to erect the home of civil engineers wall in 2017.
There were five students who proposed the idea to install the wall and started the project in 2017 but never completed it.
The wall was commissioned on Monday after its completion.
