STUDENTS at the University of Papua New Guinea will have to pay an extra 8% in fees on top of the 8% increase from last year.Student representative council president Immanuel Isaac said students would also have to pay an extra K222 for service. This meant that all students must pay K1,432 as compulsory fees for the year.Isaac said the additional service fee would be used for meals and other administrative costs such as air-conditioning in lecture rooms."The 8% increase should guarantee that all residential students get to eat decent food in the mess and there should not be any excuse of food running out," Isaac said.He called on the government to restore powers stripped from the SRC in 2001 – when four students died in riots on campus."I believe in student participation and students must utilise their rights to express themselves," he said.
