University in Hagen

Letters

THE commercial hub of the Highlands, Mount Hagen, should accommodate a government university that can complement its status as the third city of PNG.
Strategically, Mt Hagen is the choice but for political reasons important higher learning institutions were shifted to other remote uneconomical locations of the country by the previous government.
The decision was bulldozed for political convenience without giving due consideration for the welfare of both students and staff.
No security conscious parents will want to send their kids to remote locations only to be mugged, raped, robbed, attacked and killed as a result of very bad planning.
It’s like setting up shop in the jungle and expect urban folks to go shopping there.
Mount Hagen city has a suitable land mass available earmarked for the establishment of a university.
Perhaps the two senior politicians of Mt Hagen, Paias Wingti and William Duma, could put aside their political differences and co-operate to present it to Parliament for deliberation.
