Vehicle theft drops in city, 16 major crimes in 2 weeks

SIXTEEN major crimes were reported in Port Moresby over two weeks until Friday.
National Capital District Metropolitan Superintendent Perou N’Dranou told a press conference on Friday that statistics for the previous week included two armed robberies, six stolen vehicles, one break and enter and stealing, six sexual assaults, one attempted murder and two stealing cases.
N’Dranou said car thefts had decreased.
“Previously, we used to have reports of three stolen vehicles per day but now it has reduced to a stolen car per day,” he said.
N’Dranou said he was quite concerned with sexual assaults reported to police stations because the number had not decreased since he took office.
However, he said Christmas-New Year was rather quiet this year because either a lot of people had gone away for holidays or there was a bigger police presence on the streets.
N’Dranou said Gordon police were investigating a murder at Gordon bus top.
“The incident happened between a husband and a wife. They got into an argument and after that the husband came from the back and stabbed the wife,” he said.
He said the suspect has gone into hiding.
“Not much information has been received yet so we are appealing to the deceased relatives to come to the police station and provide more information about the matter,” N’Dranou said.
NCD Superintendent administration Christopher Tamare said he would stand by his undertaking and into all administrative disciplinary matters that were before this office and other stations.
“We have at managed to serve about 80 per cent of our disciplinary matters but a few are still to be looked into,” Tamare said.
He said discipline was an ongoing process in administration.
Superintendent operations Michael Tilae said a lot of policemen were arrested since the new administration took office.
