N’Dranou: Public can arrest escapees

The public has the authority to apprehend and arrest escapees and take them back to Correctional Services (CS), National Capital District Metropolitan Superintendent Perou N’Dranou says.
N’Dranou said prisoners had certain rights under the law which granted them opportunities to come out of prison on specific occasions, for example, Christmas and New Year.
But when the rights are abused, it makes it a police matter, he said.
“If they are out and have not escaped, they are guided by those provisions of the law,” N’Dranou said.
He said the public had the authority to arrest and to inform police or the CS to apprehend escapees and take them back to be charged for escaping,” he said.
