Veifa nursing school renovated

Papua

The Catholic Church-run Veifa Nursing School and health centre’s deteriorated facilities in the Kairuku-Hiri electorate of Central have been renovated and upgraded under Australian government aid.
The school and the health centre have for years been allowed to deteriorate.
Health and HIV/Aids Minister Michael Malabag, when opening the newly renovated facilities at Bereina last week, thanked Australia and also committed K1 million to further improvements to the facilities.
Malabag made a commitment for his People’s National Congress Party to provide K150,000.
Malabag said the Government and churches partnership was working throughout the country.
“Churches are providing 56 per cent of health services in the country,” he said.
“I am happy to assist with K1 million today from the Health Ministry as a minister responsible for upgrading health facilities run by Veifa’a Catholic parish.”
Kairuku-Hiri MP Peter Isoaimo thanked the Australian government for their support and contributions towards development in Kairuku-Hiri especially in health and education services.
He said such assistance took away some of the burden from him.
“The Australian government helps us in a way that we spend our own DSIP (district services improvement programme) funds on other needed projects in the district.”
Isoaimo said in the last two years the electorate has invested much of its money in health, education, community development and a rural housing scheme.
