Vendors told not to sell on streets or face court

A MAGISTRATE has warned vendors in Lae to use the proper facilities provided instead of selling along the streets.
District Court Magistrate Tera Dawai said many vendors especially in Top Town had been fined and warned earlier by the court to stop selling on the streets.
Magistrate Dawai said anyone appearing again before him on the same offence could expect a not-too-lenient sentence.
“People are not adhering to the city authority’s rules and regulations about street vending and have been arrested and charged by police,” Magistrate Dawai said.
He said there were designated places provided to carry out marketing activities.
He yesterday sentenced Win Jayson, 19, of Kema village, Kombiam-Ambum in Enga to six months in jail for selling in public place.
“Many people like you, when appearing in court, make up stories and give excuses,” he said.
Police arrested him on Monday near the Top Town bus stop for selling cigarettes.
He admitted that he had been warned before by the police not to sell items there.
Magistrate Dawai ordered that the K300 bail money be used as his court fine and warned Jayson not to repeat the offence.
