THE Catholic community at Sup village on Muschu Island, East Sepik, witnessed the baptism of 30 children and the blessing of a marriage on Dec 12.
The ceremonies were conducted by the Wewak diocese’s Bishop Joseph Roszynski.
Muschu is about a 20-minute boat ride from Wewak.
Roszynski said the people were looking forward to the event.
“They felt that reconciliation was needed. The sins of their fathers were felt as a burden on them. Therefore, they were looking for an opportunity to apologise and ask for forgiveness,” he said.
“At the beginning of the liturgical celebration, a delegation of the community expressed their apology for the wrongdoing of the past.”
Roszynski also apologised on behalf of church ministers who may have done something wrong in the past.
“Reconciliation was achieved and the liturgy proceeded with lively processions by the youths of the Catholic community,” he said.
“During the mass, I blessed the marriage of one couple and baptised 30 children.
“Traditionally, after the ceremonies, a bung kaikai (feast) was enjoyed by everybody.”
