POLICE on Manus say brothers of a grade 8 female student allegedly attacked a peace officer they saw her with, starting a big fight at Ndrehet village.
The girl is a student at the Ndrehet Primary School.
Manus police commander Chief Inspector David Yapu said the fight began on Saturday when the brothers of the female student allegedly attacked the peace officer who was going around with their sister.
When villagers at Ndrehet saw their peace officer attacked, they confronted the brothers and a big fight started in the village.
Police managed to calm things down and took the peace officer to the Bundralis health centre for treatment.
He was discharged on Monday.
Yapu, who also went to the village to get first-hand information, said the situation was under control.
Six men were arrested and transported by boat to Lorengau. Police returned to the village yesterday to round up other suspects.
Yapu warned villagers not to take the law into their own hands and thanked the female village court magistrate and the councillor of Ndrehet ward for intervening and referring the matter to police.
He said an incident at Ndrehet village last year had resulted in the death of a young man.
