VILLAGERS have killed the leader of a large group that took 10 staff members of a logging company as hostages in a remote area in Western, acting South Fly police commander Snr Insp Ewai Segi says.
Snr Insp Segi said the villagers, who were the in-laws of the leader, helped police to round up all 46 kidnappers who had taken three girls and seven men at two logging camps and demanded a ransom for their return.
He said the villagers were fed up with crime in the area and chopped off the right foot of the leader before taking him to police.
“The arrest of these kidnappers, the killing of their leader and the release of the hostages is the result of a successful 24-hour police operation in constantly raiding remote villages in the rugged, mountainous terrains along the border of Western, Southern Highlands and Hela,” Snr Insp Segi said.
He said Daru-based policemen and a Mt Hagen-based mobile squad had raided Wawoi Falls and Lake Campbell areas in Middle Fly and North Fly and arrested the kidnappers.
“The kidnappers, mostly from Hela and Southern Highlands, were hiding in this remote area,” Snr Insp Segi said.
“But villagers got fed up with them and from the heavy police operation and killed the prime suspect, Jack Pamburi, also known as Jack Tari.
He was married to a Wawoi Falls villager, has three children and was apprehended by the villagers who are also his in-laws.”
Snr Insp Segi said they chopped off Pamburi’s right foot and took him to a logging camp on Tuesday.
“He died around 3am due to heavy loss of blood.
The deceased is from Kikita village, Tari, in Hela province,” he said.
“I thank the local people who have rose to the challenge by helping police with information.”

  • the gang leader had what was coming to him. There are no happy endings in a crime of crime.

    • These villagers must be commended for a job well done.
The gang leader got what he truly deserved.
He planted the seed for a long time and got a good harvest at the right time.

  • There is no room for crime, robbery, fraud, rape and murder in our Melanesian society as far as the human dignity is concerned. Thanks to the Wawoi Falls villagers’ to eradicate crime and criminal activities along that area, i salute them all. There is must not be any room for harboring criminals nor so called warlords in our peaceful Melanesian society where we respect our fellow Melanesian their rights to life and liberty.

  • Good work.
Why can’t police do this and capture the criminals who have killed over 100 people on Lavongai island (New Hanover) over past few years?

  • Job well done to Police and the locals involved. This is the benefit of working in partnership in all aspects. Police, you have done so well to not so much eradicate this new trend of criminal activity surfacing but sending a strong message out to would be gangs to think twice attempting one.
Despite bad publicity on police operations, this operation is remarkably excellent when considering the terrain in which they have conducted the operation resulting in successful outcome.

    • it wasn’t the work of police to get that criminal killed. it was the locals, kudos to them!

  • This should be a Standard Operating Procedure where a specially trained police unit is on standby to attend to extreme cases outside of normal police operations. The unit should be funded separately, rigorously trained and well equipped for covert missions where local police are put to strain and unable to cope. The unit should be readily available and deployed at short notice to anywhere in Papua New Guinea.
All countries police forces have special forces units specialized in tactical warfare almost close to an army operation.
When an emergency calls for intricate response the Police Commander gives the nod. The rest is the unit commanders duty and whether the mission is successful or not remains the responsibility of the commanders.
I believe there is a unit call Special Forces somewhere in Port Moresby, if that is true why not specialize it..

  • Well done to the Villages and Police. For the Villagers, resorting to jungle justice may sometimes seems logical to fight fire with fire.

Thank you to the Police for also responding to these heinous crimes perpetrated by these inhuman creatures, for want of a better word, to describe the alleged offenders.

  • Crime does not pay. Those who live by the power of guns die by power of guns; those who live by the power of the sword die by the sword
