Vipers’ scouts screen city leagues

 NATIONAL Capital District Vipers selected sides played first trial match at Ipi Park Hohola yesterday.

The trial was witnessed by a good crowd who watch the best of the best from the off season leagues in Port Moresby.

Vipers coach Leonard Tarum and Vipers management decided to extend an invitation to the suburban leagues in the nation’s capital to try out their potential for selection in the final 17 players.  

Tarum said out from the more than 30 players, only 17 will make the suburban team to challenge the SNS NCD Vipers in the final selection trials at Hohola which is two weeks after the Southern leg Coca Cola Ipatas Cup.

Yesterday coach Tarum with the assistance of former Kumul Philip Boge and Gulf Isapea’s Harrison Kavora were present to select the Vipers team two.

He said this was an opportunity for potential talents to break into the Vipers team for the 2014 Digicel Cup.

It was the challenge of the best around with former Vipers Eki Ene making a comeback, Presley Soto, Stanley Holo, Tala Kami, Philip Kume, Irawqi John and Tony Wemin who stood out for team one with a sounding 28-8 win.

Team two had Junior Boge, Rex Maima, Nene Moide, John Jerry, William Mone, Tabal Henry and Nicko Dom who starred for the side.

Kumuls’ rake Charlie Wabo and backline general Jessie Joe Nande helped out with the players.

Tarum said the trials played at Hohola will also help develop the standard of rugby league in the capital in line with the Vipers’ objectives.

The trial was supported by Hohola Off Season League president Gairo Gavu who hoped the partnership with the city franchise would help develop and promote the code.
