THE Port Moresby Vipers registered a hard-earned a 16-4 win over the Chimbu Warriors in their round 13 of Digicel Cup match at the National Football Stadium yesterday.
It was a scrappy encounter but the crowd enjoyed the 80 minutes of football that featured big hits, hard tackles and bulldozing runs.
The Vipers scored three tries by winger Frank Tole, centre Sparo Thomas — in the first half — and prop Nelson Wak bagged himself a four-pointer while McKenzie Buka and Benton Leme kicked a goal each. Veteran five-eighth and captain Atte Bina Wabo, pictured, played a key role earning himself the man-of-the match. Hooker Junior Belo also played his part from the dummy half giving slick service to his play-makers and forwards.
Warriors scored a consolation try to Schwarzer Kandaki.
The home side were tested but kept their composure and lead 10-0 at halftime in the scrappy affair that did not reach any great heights.
Vipers coach Joe Sipa said his side did what they had to do to get the two competition points. “The boys were bit off and did not get their positions right as mistakes affected our sets but the Warriors were struggled like us in this area,” Sipa said.
“We have a big game next roundagainst the Gurias at Kalabond Kokopo so we’ll train for that.”
