Vision City taps taxi operators

VISION City Megamall in Waigani, Port Moresby, will now have 60 taxi cabs to provide an efficient, safe and reliable service which will start under a taxi scheme at end of this month.
This initiative was taken by the mall management after observing that public safety and security in accessing public transport was very important for customers entering and exiting the mall daily.
The main aim is to provide customers the safest, most efficient and reliable mode of public transport, according to mall security manager Sevanaia Koroi.
“Customers’ safety is important and they need to access good organised public transport.”
He said the management decided to undertake the taxi scheme under which it will advertise to source taxi service and examine vehicles and drivers prior to engaging them.
Only those who meet requirements would then be issued a taxi sticker and pay a fee of K60, Koroi said.
The mall management has discussed the scheme with the relevant authorities, including Motor Vehicle Insurance Ltd, Land Transport Division and National Capital District Commission.
“For us, we have had a close relationship with the cabs that service our customers at VC and this scheme is done in an effort to continue building the relationship,” he said.
Koroi also encouraged the private taxies to form a taxi company which they have.
“Other taxies not operating within the boundary should still come in to VC to drop off customers but must then proceed out as we  will limit our customers to only Vision City-approved taxies,” Koroi said.
He added that the aim of the establishing the scheme was to hold all the taxi drivers accountable for the safety and care of mall customers.
