Vitiaz United lead the Kumul Petroleum National Soccer League (NSL) ladder for the first time this season after the rookies claimed a 3-2 win over Morobe United at the Papua New Guinea Football Stadium in Port Moresby on Saturday.
Vitiaz were busy during the transfer window and it paid off with new signings Mathew David (double) and Jonathan Allan scoring all three of their goals.
Vitiaz wasted no time through former Lae City player David who grabbed an early lead for the hosts.
Former Bougainville striker Jonathan Allan scored Vitiaz’s second goal off a cross from teammate Emanuel Simongi to give the hosts a 2-0 lead.
United opened their account a minute later through Jeremy Yasasa to trail 1-2 at halftime.
The second half saw both sides maintaining their intensity but ill-discipline dominated the stanza with more than 10 yellow cards handed to both sides.
Vitiaz extended their lead to 3-1 early in the second half when David completed his double off a cross by Elliott Foni.
Morobe kept their hopes alive when Simongi scored from the penalty spot to trail 2-3 after a Vitiaz player was ruled to have handled the ball.
But the home side hung on to claim their eighth win of the season.
