Volunteer service a vital tool to lift service delivery

THE National Volunteer Service is an important tool to improve service delivery in the country, says Secretary for Youth, Religion and Community Development Anna Solomon.
She said through partnership work with churches and non-government organisation, there were some positive achievements and more such partnership was needed.
Solomon said on Monday, Australia and PNG came together to advance the course of volunteerism in the two countries, and the region as a whole.
“This is against the backdrop of our two countries having championed partnerships on many levels and in so many fronts, like the famous Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels of WW2 in pre-independence PNG and joint economic, political and security arrangements,” she said.
Solomon said the Australian Indigenous Community Volunteers and NVS partnership was unique in that it involved indigenous people from both countries.
She said NVS PNG stood to gain in many ways through the sharing of experiences, ideas and resources with ICV Australia.
Solomon said NVS was created by an Act of Parliament for the purpose of service delivery.
“Today, we are still faced with the same issues of service delivery,” she said. “Who have we bypassed along the way? What gaps have we created?
“How can we uphold volunteerism that has existed in our traditional styles of service: Of serving one another and modify it to unlock the power behind service delivery?”
