Works changes for better roads

WORKS and Implementation Secretary David Wereh says the department is continuing to drive necessary internal change to ensure better quality roads are built in the country.
He said Works was the main technical arm of Government responsible for management and development of the country’s national road network.
Wereh said it provided the enabling environment to foster economic and social developments.
He said Works was also responsible for maintaining highway engineering and building standards, as well as specifications for bridge and road construction works.
Wereh said since the development of Road and Bridge Works Specifications in 1978, supplementary specifications were added where appropriate.
“Delivering high quality road works is paramount to Works Department,” he said. “It continuously seeks to improve value for money in road maintenance activities. One such improvement is recent development of highway maintenance specifications,”
Wereh said the specifications focused specifically on setting and enforcing appropriate standards for road maintenance works throughout the country.
“The highway maintenance specifications is a stand-alone document that will complement the road and bridge works construction specifications,” he said.
“It is an important part of Works Department’s continuous development drive to achieve the objective of a sustainable national road network.”
