Volunteer teachers in Nawaeb attend training

MORE than 80 volunteer teachers and trainers of teachers (TOTs) from Nawaeb district, Morobe, attended a two-week training programme run by Ginigoada Foundation.
The foundation, in partnership with Unicef, ran the training from Jan 14-25 at Catholic Diocesan Pastoral Centre, 8-Mile, Lae.
Training focused on:

  • Early childhood development (ECD) programme for pre-school aged children; and,
  • Bridge programme — an out-of-school programme for children between the ages of six to 18 years who do not go to school.

The two-week training programme was organised by Hoge Baeau, Ginigoada ECD programme manager and facilitated by Cathy Patruvii, ECD specialist, Unicef.
Sets of Bilum Books’ standard-based curriculum (SBC) English books were given to the 40 ECD centres/elementary schools represented, as a resource for the teaching of English.
The Bilum Books were part of school learning materials purchased through Unicef funding.
Bilum Books trainer Irene Sawczak ran a two-day workshop within the two-week training programme on how to teach English using Bilum Books’ SBC English elementary programme.
Sixty-three teachers received Bilum Books certificates at the end of the two-day workshop.
“Bilum Books SBC English was chosen because, for children six to 18 years who do not go to school, the books are well structured and easy to follow and user-friendly,” Baeau said.
“They are also completely aligned with Department of Education’s elementary English standards-based curriculum.”
Teachers’ enthusiasm in undertaking all activities during the workshop highlighted that participants were keen to learn all they could about the teaching of English as outlined in the new elementary English syllabus.
On the completion of the workshop, teachers felt that they were better equipped to teach English.
Sawczak thanked Baeau for organising the workshop and the generosity of Unicef for funding the training and the purchasing of books for teachers who attended the workshop.
Bilum Books provides teacher training free of charge, for districts and school clusters that buy their books.
