HELA Wigmen coach Charlie Wabo is satisfied that his men gave a good account of themselves in the Digicel Cup finals despite their inconsistency throughout the 2021 season.
Wigmen finished fifth in the 12-team competition table and made it as far as week two of the finals in their bid for back-to-back titles
Their campaign fell short as Waghi Tumbe knocked them out with 20-19 win in a thriller at the Oil Search National Football Stadium yesterday.
Wabo said after the loss yesterday that his side would come back stronger next year.
“I think the way we ended the season really reflects the way we have approached the 2021 season,” Wabo said.
“We have not been consistent throughout the season.
“We started the season well with four straight wins but then we recorded losses and a few wins at the back end of the season so that’s how it has been.
“After losing the bulk of our last year’s (grand final winning) squad to the Hunters we had to recruit again this year.
“But despite the inexperience I think we gave our best and competed well.”
Wabo said there was potential in his current squad.
He said they would look to build.
“For me I want to keep this playing group,” he said.
“I think they did okay and going forward we would look at maintaining the team and build on from this year.”
Wabo thanked the Hela fans for their continued support. He also thanked Kroton and Kumul Petroleum Holding (KPHL) for supporting the team.
