Strong defence help Raiders stun Isou

Hosts Rigo Raiders sprung a 22-12 upset win over Gulf Isou in round one of the Southern Super League National Gaming Control Board Cup at Kwikila in Rigo, Central, on Saturday.
Rigo had no big-name players but they more than held their own against Isou who fielded Digicel Cup and fringe players.
The Raiders bagged four unanswered tries and three conversions in the first half to establish a commanding 22-0 lead over the visitors.
The tries were scored by centres John Toby (double) and Charlie Nick, and winger Joshua Badira with Tom Mana taking care of the conversions.
Raiders coach Gwaibo Mairi instructed his players to muscle up in defence and protect their lead which they did valiantly.
“Credit should go to all the players for defending solidly against the opposition,” he said.
Mairi said as the PNG Rugby Football League Southern Confederation director, it was his obligation to help develop and identify potential talents at the grassroots level.
It was the reverse in the second half as Isou — whose captain Smith Siviri was sin-binned in the opening minutes — scored unconverted tries through Anderson Heve (double) and Micha Heve and kept the hosts scoreless.
