WAGHI Tumbe are confident that newly-appointed coach and former SP PNG Hunters forward Baundo Aba will lift the team in the 2021 Digicel Cup season.
Tumbe chairman Paul Tumun told The National yesterday that despite Aba having little coaching experience, they were counting on his experience and knowledge of the game.
“Baundo has been with the SP Hunters for some time and has played under some quality coaches and we are confident that he has a good understanding of the game,” he said.
“He also played for Tumbe last year.
“He is very young for a coach but he has what it takes to be one.
“Recently, he coached a Banz team in the Jiwaka Governor’s Cup, they won the minor premiership and reached the grand final.
“Unfortunately, they lost the final.
“So that’s what gave us the confidence to give him a shot as a coach at the semi-professional level.
“He will be assisted by experienced coaches like Dusty Mockly and others.
“So we hope they work together to help the team perform better this year.”
Tumun said Aba had suffered a season-ending knee injury last year.
He said Aba had consulted doctors at Kundiawa Hospital over a knee reconstruction.
“The doctors had advised him not play this year while recovering,” Tumun said.
“So while his injury heals, he can coach the team.”
Tumun said Aba still had a chance to return as player if he successfully recovered.
“That’s not the end of him,” he said.
