WAGHI Tumbe moved into the top-six of the Digicel Cup after they handed hosts Post Moresby Vipers a second-straight loss the Oil Search National Football Stadium yesterday.
Both teams scored two tries each but it was Tumbe No.6 Saki Peter’s one successful conversion and a penalty goal that made the difference in the 12-8 win.
The Vipers couldn’t convert both of their tries.
The Jiwaka government sponsored-side scored first in the ninth minute when hooker Goi Sakipe set up Dominic Minji who crossed over. Peter converted the try for a 6-0 lead.
A few minutes later, in an unpleasant scene, Vipers lock Maya Clark collided with Tumbe’s Nelson Kumbe which saw both men taken off the field for head knocks.
Clark managed to return later on in the game but Kumbe’s day was over.
After several failed attempts by the Vipers on Tumbe’s tryline, they finally scored in the 28th minute through captain Thompson Teteh on the right edge.
The Vipers couldn’t convert the try as they trailed 4-6 at halftime.
Both teams came back strong in the second half, but the Vipers made too many errors which dented their chances of scoring more tries.
But they scored their second try in the 57th minute, courtesy of a set move by halfback Karis Peter which saw winger Ben Wemin dive over in the corner.
The Vipers again couldn’t convert the try, but they took an 8-6 lead for the first time in the game.
But the hosts’ lead didn’t last long as Peter kicked a penalty goal for Tumbe 40m out to level the scores.
With Tumbe enjoying back-to-back sets in the Vipers red zone, former SP Hunter Joe Frank ran across the field to link up with fellow centre Valentine Wamdi who scored the winning try.
