WAGHI Tumbe secured another two competition points after they beat Enga Mioks 14-12 in round six of the Digicel Cup at the Oil Search National Football Stadium in Port Moresby yesterday.
Tumbe opened the scoring in the first half through an unconverted try by halfback David Joseph before the Mioks evened the scores through William Mone.
The Mioks led at half-time through a penalty kick that put them at 6-4 before their hopes of earning their first win of the season were crushed by the Baundo Abba-coached side in the second half.
Tumbe came back stronger with two more tries within 10 minutes through fullback Manisah Kai and prop Paul Koi, giving a 14-6 lead to the Andrew Andiki-coached side.
The Mioks, eager to catch up with the Jiwaka side, scored their final try through hooker Nicky Aure with a successful conversion which saw them trail 12-14.
Attempts by the Mioks to score more tries in the dying minutes were unsuccessful as Tumbe held their defensive line until fulltime.
Abba told The National that although he was impressed with the win, the team still had work to do to improve their performances.
“We trained well but there are some areas that we need to fix, including discipline,” he said.
“Discipline is key, most of the players need to maintain focus especially when we’re leading.”
So far, Tumbe have won four and lost two games.
Abba said for their next match against Mt Hagen Eagles, they would be working on their combinations as well as correcting the errors from yesterday’s match.
