WATER PNG Ltd and relevant authorities in Lae will do a joint inspection of waste treatment facilities of industries in the Morobe capital.
Executive manager for State owned-entities and officer-in-charge of Water PNG, Parkop Kurua, made this known in response to media reports concerning the over flow of sewage in the Malahang area.
“It is Water PNG’s responsibility in ensuring that such waste are treated within the industry’s premises acceptable to Water PNG’s industrial waste treatment requirements before it is disposed into Water PNG’s main sewer line,” he said in a statement.
“These are regulatory issues which industries within the Malahang area and other parts of Lae need to comply with.”
Kurua said this also included other centres which had industries within the Water PNG Sewage system.
He said samples were taken at industries suspected of disposing untreated fat, oil and grease waste last month.
Reports would be available and appropriate action would be taken, including penalties, after public areas were affected in the Malahang area.
“Water PNG operations team are looking into the affected infrastructure areas and will further improve the affected sewer lines and other areas within Lae, of any similar potential issues that may arise,” Kurua said.
“Water PNG sincerely apologises for the inconvenience caused to the public.”
