WAU Soccer Association completed its season with grand finals on Saturday, despite challenges amid the Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, according to president Shem Farrock.
“Because of a short season, teams in all divisions tried their best to perform in one round of competition,” he said.
“Despite Covid-19 measures, the association managed to complete the season on a high note.
“We run the competition to keep players active and away from illegal activities.
“The other reason is to identify our champions for the Papua New Guinea Football Association-sanctioned national club championships.”
Yanga edged Hardrocks 1-0 in the Under-17 boys division and Hulung beat Kurex 2-1 in the men’s B grade.
Minor premiers Zairas beat Kurex 2-1 to claim the women’s title.
In the men’s A-league, Yanga Pirates, of Wandumi, faced Neighbours, but the match was abandoned due to drunkards disrupting the game in the first half.
Neighbours opened the scoring 20 minutes in through Benray Demba via a quick play by Yama Sihong after the Pirates backline conceded a foul in their own half.
Pirates pair Moses Sine and Parame applied pressure on the Neighbours backline of Jason Farrock and Nathan Kidabing, and had many attempt on goal.
But Neighbours goalkeeper Trevor Farrock was equal to the task.
Ten minutes from halftime, the game was abandoned after the disruption.
For the safety of the players, supporters and match officials. Shem had to order the cancellation of the grand final.
