WAWIN National High School in Morobe has graduated 205 students despite setbacks in school infrastructure and maintenance.
Speaking during the 17th graduation ceremony yesterday, principal Pal Pu said the school had a few needs that were becoming a hindrance to its progress.
“The school has water and sewerage issues to dormitories and teachers’ houses,” he said.
“We need a multi-purpose hall, because currently we are using the dining hall to conduct lectures, social activities and hold exams.
“Our science laboratory is incomplete; there is no science equipment or necessities to conduct experiments.
“There are also frequent power blackouts that are affecting our classes, but we have a stand-by generator to help our students.
“We need one more female dormitory to cater for our female intakes.”
Pu said more than K3 million was needed to address thoseissues.
He said the school could bring the best out of the students, if the issues were addressed properly.
Education Secretary Dr Uke Kombra, said that despite those issues, Wawin was one of the top five schools in the country.
He thanked the teachers, students and nearby communities for achieving that high status.
Pu called on the Education Department to reintroduce the general infrastructure maintenance grants and general operational grants as the tuition fee free funding was not enough.
