THE Lae City Authority and police have commissioned reservists to work alongside police to keep the city clean and free of crime and illegal activities.
Two women are among about 80 men engaged from today to carry out awareness programmes in the city and suburbs over the next two weeks – to tell the public of the intentions of the authorities to make Lae safer.
Speaking during the commissioning yesterday, acting Lae Metropolitan Superintendent Fred Kaiwa told the reservists that they were the ears and eyes of the police in the fight against crime in the communities.
“We will work closely with you under the metro command to make sure we are able to address problems with drugs, home brew, street vending and other activities,” Kaiwa said.
Awareness programmes will be carried out at the main market, town area and Eriku from today with the support of police.
Worked in areas outside the city will follow.
“Police will provide support with you to do awareness in settlements and other areas and tell the people that those illegal activities like street vending, loitering at night, K5 boss crew and others will go to make the city clean,” Kaiwa told the reservists.
“This will give us an opportunity to also enforce the city council laws and regulations during the course of your duty over the next two weeks and beyond.”
Kaiwa said there was time to cover every settlement and suburb and along the miles area towards Nadzab and Mutzing on the Highlands Highway.
Those who were chosen to be part of the team were leaders from each area in the city.
Kaiwa told the team that the consumption of drug and homebrew was on the rise.
