Ways sought for streets kids

National

A GOVERNMENT department and police want to address the problem of street children harassing people and involved in petty crime starting in Port Moresby.
Community Development, Youth and Religion Minister Wake Goi recently said the plan was to take some of the children to care centres so that could be adopted into foster homes.
They will target children with “genuine cases” – those who are homeless and have no families.
Goi was responding to concerns raised about the increasing reports of child abuse and homeless children in Port Moresby.
He plans to table amendments to the Lukautim Pikinini Act in Parliament to ensure that children were protected.
“The first option would be to hold parents, both the mother and father accountable for their children,” he said.
“If they are neglecting their children, than they will be prosecuted.
“The care centres will be temporary. The children will stay there while foster families and homes are arranged for them.”

  • The LPA 2015 was not fully implemented and yet another review? Resources the CPOS and increase funding allocation so that the CPO will effectively carry out their duties.
