A POLICE team has been sent to a gold mine in Central after a man was killed and a police officer injured in a tribal fight.
Goilala MP William Samb said the police team from Port Moresby would reinforce security at the Tolokuma gold mine to deal with those involved in the tribal fight.
He said a security guard was also injured.
“Officers took an injured man to Port Moresby General Hospital while others will be also be taken out,” he said. A witness who asked to remain anonymous told The National that the fight started when K17,000 belonging to a businessman went missing on Monday night in a house where a group of men were drinking.
An argument started yesterday when relatives of the businessman killed a father-of-two from Chirime village in Waitape.
They also burned down three markets on the road.
“The angry locals chopped the leg of the policeman working at the station,” he said.
The situation is still tense and villagers have vacated their homes and fled into the bush.
They include the son and daughter of the dead man and their mother.
Central police commander Chief Supt Johnenes Yapi is aware of the incident and will be fully briefed once he returns from leave.
