A WORLD Boxing Association (WBA) Asia super featherweight title rematch between Papua New Guinea champion Raka Kauko Jr and Filipino Roldan Aldea is due in three months’ time, says an official.
PNG Boxing Council president Ben Micah said that after Kauko lost on unanimous decision at the Sir John Guise Stadium Indoor Complex in Port Moresby on Sunday night.
He said it was in the WBA rules that a boxer who won a title fight must defend the belt after three months through a rematch.
“So we are expecting a rematch either in the Philippines or here in PNG,” Micah said. “But we would prefer to have it here in Port Moresby, so that we can use that to promote professional boxing in the country.”
Aldea, who is now the WBA Asia super featherweight champion, said on Sunday that he would welcome a rematch.
“I will be prepared to defend this belt,” he said. “If Kauko wants a rematch then I look forward to it. Kauko is a very strong fighter but I managed to record a win, so if there is a rematch then it’ll be another exciting one.”
Meanwhile, Micah said Aldea was more experienced than Kauko but he was proud of the PNG champion’s performance. Aldea comes from a boxing-mad country,” he said.
“For our local boy to last 10 rounds and give a good challenge is something we should be proud of.
“Kauko fought well and if the fight had gone for another two rounds, the result would have been different.
“So we look forward to a rematch.”
