We need people with honour

Honour makes kings and men great.
Honour prevents a man from throwing a punch and abusing his wife.
Honour keeps young women virgin and pure till the day they marry.
Honour made wars of olden days much meaningful than the battles we have today.
This generation has surely lost its honour and the essence of it.
During my final year in university, one of the fathers gathered some of us together for Bible study.
I can still remember what he told us that day.
He highlighted two words – “stature” and “status”.
He advised us “it is better to grow in stature rather than in status”.
And he explained these two words in relation to an old Melanesian parable.
He asked us to compare the growth of a bamboo to a regular tree.
A bamboo shoots out from the ground and grows up quickly.
But at its fullest height, it bends over and dies quickly.
A tree grows slowly and after decades, it reaches where the bamboo once drooped over it.
But the tree continues to grow.
He said pride often caused one to grow like a bamboo, similar to growing in status, fame and publicity.
He said it was wiser to choose to grow slowly, and grow in stature like the tree.
Stature and honour come hand in hand.
A man of stature is a man of honour.
He has neither pride nor selfishness; he values small things because it is small things that made him great. Honour is what keeps his stature time and time again.
He does not have to scheme or devise plans to make him great, He does not steal to be rich nor give people money to win their favour.
Honour draws riches to him and wins the people’s favour.
Honour earns him respect from everyone.
The Bible says in Proverbs 25:2: “It is the glory of God to conceal a thing (matter), but the honour of kings is to search out a matter.”
PNG needs its people to be men and women of honour.
Let us not sell our votes but let us choose wisely because the fate of our children and grandchildren lies in today’s decision.
The future of our children and grandchildren is priceless and cannot be sold and gambled with.
Be a man and woman of honour and vote honourably in next year’s election.
