We respect Sir Michael but it’s time to go

Letters, Normal

I REFER to the prime minister’s front page apology in The National (May 17).
Papua New Guinea should salute Sir Michael Somare for who he is.
In other parts of the world, when leaders grow, they become wiser and give words of wisdom.
However in PNG, the opposite is happening.
Common sense goes out of the window and poor and haphazard decisions reign.
What is there to stop the PM from lashing out again in future and then apologising a week later?
In my opinion, this will only cast more doubts on the PM’s ability to call the shots and more questions will be raised than answered.
I believe his time is up and the PM should step aside and make way for young leaders to take on the challenges and lead this nation forward.
I feel the PM is unable to accept criticisms and comments levelled at him and the government.
Many of us feel the apology was made because he feared losing the people’s votes.
His apology did not come from his the bottom of his heart.
We are sorry that the PM, the leader of this country, called us names and we let him off without taking him to task.
One thing is for sure, we respect him for what he has done.
But the time has come for Sir Michael to step aside.
