We should consider a food subsidy policy

Letters

A FOOD subsidy policy is what Papua New Guinea needs.
It may be a new concept to us but it is widely used in other countries and has proven to be successful.
The United States of America and Egypt are using that policy.
They have been using it for over a decade and it has been working really well for them.
Many of their impoverished citizens who have been struggling to make ends meet are being helped by their respective governments through food subsidy policies.
The United States started implementing their policy during the great depression, which is called the food stamp programme, or the supplemental nutrition assistance programme (Snap).
Similarly, Egypt uses the name Balladi Break and Ration Cards as their policy.
Both countries have helped many of their citizens through tough economic periods.
Many of their businesses thrived when their countries faced adverse economic downturns. Papua New Guinea should consider this.
Many Papua New Guineans are struggling to make ends meet with the challenging high cost of goods and services.

  • They will stop struggling if they were in their villages.
We do not this nonsense of subsidising expensive city/squatter settlement living.
